Hello, I am from holland and drive a volvo 360. I few monds ago i put a B230FB engine from a volvo 940 in my 360. I have a problem with the valves. They make tikking noizes. I think the valves have to be adjusted. I check some forum from out country but i didn't find anything about it. I also used the search on this forum but found nothing there. That's why i make a new topic. I want to know the valve clearance of that engine. And in what order i have to adjust the valves. Gr Frank.
Hi, Welcome to the forum. I have a 230FB in my 940. The manual gives the following information Valve clearances Checking values Cold engine 0.30 to 0.40 mm Warm engine 0.35 to 0.45 mm Setting value Cold engine 0.35 to 0.40 mm Warm engine 0.40 to 0.45 mm I have never heard that it was necessary to check or adjust valves in any order. I start at number 1 end of the engine.

Hi Frank, Just ensure the Cam is pointing up as you check each valve clearance. There is no order sequence as you can see the cam. The order sequence is required for an engine where the cam is not visable ( ie Ford OHV Escort Mk 2 engine ). ivor940
Does anywhone have a picture of they special key wich you use to change the fillingplates on the valves whyle the camshaft isn't removed. Than i can make that key for myself.
I am sure there will be a special tool which can be bought from Volvo to use whilst changing shims. I used a large screwdriver wedged against the cam shaft to push the valve down. I then used a smaller screwdriver, again wedged under the cam shaft and pushing on the lip around the shim, to keep the valve down. I then flipped the shim out (useing a small almost pointed screwdriver). You will need a micrometer or digital vernier caliper to measure the shim you take out so you can calculated which size shim you need to put back. The size of the shim was not visible on the shims I removed.
If the tappits have not been out of the engine for a long time ,then take the cam out ,and then remove the tappits. Under this there is a ruber anty rattle ring that sits on the top of the valve(often stuck to the bottom of the tappit). These go very hard and can split, only use genuyne volvo. Even if the gap is right the tappits willbe noiser if this ruber has gone hard/split. Also replace the cam seals and belt unless nearly new. It dose take longer and you still have to set the tappits after. You can use a big screw driver and a thine one to do the job but is alittle fidley, make shure the piston on the cylinder that you are doing is not at top dead center as on some engines the valve travel will hit the piston. The job is easer with the right volvo tools ,but not worth it for just one engine. Regards Roger
