Forgot to mention - I was going to replace the gasket anyway. Im just going to look in my workshop manual - but when I take the cover off how would I put a piece of plastic over the head when there is all 'the workings' sticking up into where the cover would be? (If you get what i mean??!!) anyone got a pic of an engine with the cover off? Steve

Hi, no im not going to laquer it afterwards - ill just keep it polished up by hand. The car is inside a fairly dey garage and obviously the bonnet will be down - what about putting something like an old fleece over the top after I have taken the cover off? So should I order a genuine gasket through volvo? When putting the cover back on, I would get my Dad to help me with torquing the bolts etc. Steve

it should be fine in the garage with some sort of covering - just spray some oil over the camshaft every week or so . It would be a good idea to get a new Genuine Volvo gasket if it hasnt been off for years. You will need the rubber semi-circular rubber seal at the back too , you will see this when you take the old gasket off . Whilst the cover is off why not measure the valve clearances too , it's easy to do once you have read the manual on how to do it ...

Do get a Volvo replacement, I bought an aftermarket one a few years ago and it only lasted about 3k or so. I have since replaced that one for a Volvo original & thats been fine for over 15k now! Also, there is no need to use any form of sealant on these gaskets. Torque setting is 108 in-lbs. Have attached some 'destructions' from Haynes - do not worry about the RTV sealant it mentions you should not need any. The 'grommit' they mention should come with the gasket.

Thanks 'Clan', I'm sure my grommit came with over here (France). I ordered the part, however from an independant garage. It may have been that they saw fit to order me a grommit as well....... Sorry if I've confused anyone.
