Hi people, this is my first post on the forum. I have just purchased a 99 v40 2l petrol auto and am delighted with it, however i have noticed that there is a clunk when pulling away from standstill or from very slow speeds. it seems to be coming from the front but hard to be absolutely sure, it also dissapears after 20 minutes or so. There is also a rattling that sounds like something loose underneath the car when going over uneven surfaces - exhaust maybe?

1st off, hello and welcome to the forums, now this rattling.. you say its from the front? it could be drive shafts or wishbones, the noise going over bumps sounds liek wishbones actually, id have a look at them. hope this helps. Jim

the rattleing sounds like at the back, the single clunk on pulling away is from the front - reading up i think maybe the driveshaft bolt problem that is fixed with the xc90 bolts - dont know, but it never does it after about 20 minutes even under really hard acceleration from a standstill, only seems to do it from cold.

Mine used to make a clunk due to the osf strut top bearing being f**ked. A quick check (assuming that you can see the centre bolt - i.e. no cover) is to bounce the front - if the the top bolt moves you're probably okay, if it doesn't get it checked properly!

I have discovered a way of replicating the clunk while stationary, i wonder if anyone has any thoughts.... when i pull away i get a clunk. I can get what i beleive is the same clunk if i hold the car on the footbrake and with the auto box in reverse, simply shifting into neutral makes the clunk, acompanied by the car jolting as the drive is released. The softer clunk ocasionaly heard when lifting off the throttle is sometimes heard changing from D to n, there is no noise selecting D, just the rocking of the car as it takes up drive. I presume this might lead to the area of the driveshaft, i'm just trying to get my head around the mechanics of the noise occuring when shifting from R to N, being the same noise i hear when driving away.... anyones thoughts on this would be highly appreciated, it would be good to get this reloved inside my 3 month warranty ;-)
