Does anyone use an external editor?

I have Sound Forge, but since I've been using Reaper I haven't had much use for SF. I understand SF is mostly a "one track or stereo" editor, but does anyone have the need to use an external editor such as SF in Reaper? If so, for what? I guess I'm looking for suggestions to make use of my SF. My other question is if I double click and edit a file in SF, how do put it back into Reaper? Do I need to save the SF file, then import the file back into Reaper? Does Reaper save a copy of the orginal? I haven't done it yet, so I want to make sure of the process. Thanks.

Hi, I own soundforge since version 6, before it was sold to Sony that is. I still use it for many things, especially if I want to do some experimental work with a wav-file. (As Reaper is so great that it can use flac or ape files I often see by doubleclicking the file that it wouldn't open in SF, hehe...). It is a topic you can read quite a bit around here. Many don't need a second editor. I just like Soundforge, and I'm just used to it. The noise reduction tool in SF9 is the best one I have, to begin with. Many things are laid out so clearly, and while I could do many things in reaper for sure, I just do them in SF from time to time. If you setup SF as your audio editor in Reaper, (options - preferences - external editors) and double-click your wav, it instantly opens in SF. After you edit it and save it, it is re-loaded that way in Reaper automatically. Easy! I like that.

I also use Sound Forge (have been since 1999). Great APP. Now that I use REAPER, I only use it to do waveform edits occasionally or to master.

I use ProTools v7.4 and have since version one. So, does everyone in my profession. jas(MPSE) [Motion Picture Sound Editors]. It's simply necessary when one does thousands of edits per day on hundreds of tracks (sometimes more than 100 per cut). I wish Reaper could cut this way too.

I use adobe audition 3.0, its also fast and cuts well. I just wish reaper could allow use to zoom in, highlight noise, and simply mute or add silence to a clip. To remove unwanted noise.

Thanks for all replies. I agree SF may have a smoother editing workflow - but truth is I'm totally confortable with Reaper. I still haven't decided if I'll incorporate SF yet. CD Architect is different though - I can put track text on a CD and burn a red book cd.
